From the Outside Looking In at Lent
“Discipline is the creation of boundaries that keep time and space open for God……” Father Henri Nouwen
If you have been in denial thus far, it is time to note we are in a darkened economic climate.
We do not have to be reminded that our investments have been in a state of free fall. The auto industry is failing, as are many large banks. Foreclosures are moving in for many folks who find themselves one of the increasing number of unemployed, while our school systems are set in “survival mode”. These are indeed, difficult days.
Last week, President Obama said: “While our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken; though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, I want every American to know this: We will rebuild, we will recover and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.”
The season of Lent also serves to remind us of difficult days ahead.
After proclaiming Jesus as the Christ at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus then shocked the disciples by telling them he would soon suffer and die but rise on the 3rd day. At first hearing they were neither prepared nor open to digest such a radical statement.
Lent is face up time - If we have been in denial about the state of the economy – it’s for real.
Lent is Spring Cleaning time – The concept of spring cleaning actually came from the 40 day discipline of Lent where one cleaned their physical and spiritual house.
Lent is time to stop the things that are keeping you busy but not soulful. How can our sins be uncovered unless we stop the things that detract and distract.
Lent is a season of soul searching and repentance as a preparation for the joy of Easter.
Lent says: Let us look our lives to see what is causing pain and unhealth, so we can work to remove it and come through to a better day.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12: 1-3
