Shepherd's Center of St. Andrews
Shepherd’s Center of St. Andrews is an interfaith program for active adults over 50, is housed at Ashland, and is supported by other congregations in the St. Andrews community. It is affiliated with the national Shepherd’s Center organization founded in Kansas City in 1972. Since its founding at Ashland in 1989, membership has grown to over 300.
Meeting Schedule. The Center provides three nine-week sessions in Winter, Spring and Fall and a six-week program in Summer. Sessions are held on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. followed by an optional catered lunch featuring speakers or entertainment.
Adventures in Learning. The centerpiece of the program is the Adventures in Learning curriculum offering classes each session on a variety of topics. Classes are taught by knowledgeable volunteers from local colleges and the community. Classes are planned for diverse interests and include subjects such as literature, history, politics, religion, music, sports, movies, current affairs and science. In addition, members may choose activities such as line dancing, tai chi, creative writing, quilting, bridge, art or Spanish.
A number of classes are presented each of the three hours and one low registration fee provides members the opportunity to take any class they wish at each hour. Lunches are paid separately each week.
Other Activities. In addition to the Adventures in Learning program, the Center provides other programs and services:
- Service Projects. Members select a service project each session to benefit the local community.
- Trips. Day trips by bus are scheduled periodically to places of interest in the region.
- Member Services. To benefit our members, the Center provides such services as flu shots, driver safety instruction, document shredding, and tax assistance.
- Special events celebrations
