Third Sunday in Lent March 7, 2010 Isaiah 55:1-9
The prophet speaks to the suffering Israel in their time of exile, calling them to return to the covenant with God. Psalm 63:1-8 O God, you are my God, I seek you.
1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Even though we are often unfaithful, God is faithful. Luke 13:1-9 This is Jesus’ response upon hearing a report of a terrible tragedy in which Pilate massacred a group of innocent people at the temple. The parable of the barren fig tree follows.
Fourth Sunday in Lent March 14, 2010 Joshua 5:9-12
Israel enters the promised land with great thanksgiving after 40 years of wandering. Psalm 32 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven.
2 Corinthians 5:16-21 Paul’s great statement of the “new creation.” Luke 15:1-3,11b-32 The great parable of the prodigal son. It is also named Parable of the Waiting Father.
Fifth Sunday in Lent March 21, 2010 Isaiah 43:16-21
The prophet tells suffering Israel that God is about to do something new. Psalm 126 We were like people renewed in health.
Philippians 3:4b-14 Paul stresses the Christian life as a matter of pressing on towards the finishing line. John 12:1-11 Jesus’ feet are anointed by a woman who loves him, giving us a preview of the events awaiting him.
Palm/Passion Sunday March 28 2010
Isaiah 50:4-9a Isaiah speaks God’s truth to the people even though they resist it and try to avoid it. Psalm 118:1-2,19-29 Blessed is he who enters in the name of the Lord. Philippians 2:5-11 Paul praises Christ who emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.
Luke 19:28-40 Jesus enters Jerusalem: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
