1st Sunday after the Epiphany

- Baptism of the Lord Genesis 1: 1-5 God's spirit broods over the dark waters and creation is brought into being. Psalm 29 This psalm is often considered to be an Israelite adaptation of an old Canaanite hymn. Acts 19:1-7 Paul baptizes so that new converts might receive the Holy Spirit, thus linking the gift of the Holy Spirit with the gift of water for baptism. Mark 1: 4-11 After Jesus' baptism by John in the river Jordan, the voice from heaven declares who Jesus is.

2nd Sunday after the Epiphany

I Samuel 3: 1-10 Young Samuel, helping the elderly Eli in the temple, is called by God Psalm 139 1-6, 13-18 This magnificent psalm asserts that our lives come from God, belong to God and find their true destination in doing God's will. I Corinthians 6: 12-20 "Glorify Christ in your bodies," urges Paul the apostle. John 1: 43-51 Jesus calls to Philip, "Follow me." Philip calls to Nathanael, "Come and see." The disciples grow in number.

Jonah 3: 1-5, 10 After being saved from drowning by a great fish, Jonah submits to God's command to go to Nineveh and preach. Psalm 62: 5-12 A great statement of faith about God's presence and protection I Corinthians 7:29-31 Live in accordance with the signs of the times. Mark 1: 14-20 After John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus calls his first disciples.
